Indo-U.S. Joint Clean Energy Research & Development Centre (JCERDC) - Phase II
Energy cooperation is a central element of the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership. Recognizing the need to address climate change, ensure mutual energy security, and build a clean energy economy that drives investment, job creation, and economic growth; India and the United States launched the U.S.-India Partnership to Advance Clean Energy (PACE) on November 24, 2009 under the U.S.-India Memorandum of Understanding enhancing cooperation on Energy Security, Energy Efficiency, Clean Energy and Climate Change. As a priority initiative under the PACE umbrella, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Government of India signed an agreement to establish the Joint Clean Energy Research and Development Centre (JCERDC) on November 4, 2010. The JCERDC is designed to promote clean energy innovation by teams of scientists and engineers from India and the United States.
The Indo-U.S. joint clean Energy R&D centre (JCERDC) is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India and the U.S. Department of Energy. The program began in the year 2012 with IUSSTF as the implementing agency
Based on the success of Phase I of the JCERDC, both countries decided to expand the “Partnership to Advance Clean Energy Research (PACE-R)” to two new research areas critical to improving the reliability, flexibility, and efficiency of the electricity delivery system: Smart Grid and Energy Storage. This initiative was envisaged to bring together top researchers from both countries and generate key technological advancements through collaborations between the U.S. and India. The U.S. Department of Energy and the Government of India (through Ministry of Science and Technology) each committed US$ 1.5 million per year over a five year period (with 50% cost share coming in from the consortium partners).
After an intensive multi-level review, the following consortium was selected for award in September 2017:
